ThefilmisaboutayoungmannamedMichaelOher--anextremelylargeblackteenagerwhohasbouncedfromhometohomeinthefostercaresystem.Currently,he'sinanewschoolandnoonerealizesthathehasnoplacetolive.Yetinspiteofhavingacrack-addictedmother,afatherwhowaskilledinprisonandeveryotherreasontobeanangrypowderkeg,he'saverygentleandsadsoul---whoisalsoenormousandhasamazingpotentialtoplayfootball.
Anosybutverynicelady(SandraBullock)convincesherhusband(TimMcGraw)tobringMichaelhome...atleastforthenight.Butthisonenightturnsintoapermanentlivingsituationandhebecomesanimportantpartofthefamily.However,despitethisnewlivingarrangementworkingoutwell,MichaelissofarbehindinschoolandhisGPAsolowthathehasn'taprayertoplayfootballincollege.That'sbecausealthoughmanyschoolsarenowofferinghimathleticscholarships,hisGPAistoolowtoallowhimtoaccepttheseoffers.So,withhisnewfamily'shelp,perhapshecanpullupthosegradesandhaveafuture.
Thisfilmissuper-inspirationalandsweet--mostlybecauseit'strue.Iamsurethatsomepoeticlicensewastakenwhenmakingthefilm(IespeciallywonderifthelittlebrothercouldbeTHISprecociousandadorable),butoveralltheydidagoodjobofstickingreasonablyclosethefacts.WhileIlovedSandraBullock'sperformance(she'sgreatasusual),IwasabitsurprisedthatshereceivedOscarforit--IdidseeafewperformancesinotherfilmsthatyearthatIthoughtwereabitbetter(suchastheleadingyoungladyin"Precious").Also,TimMcGraw,whilealesserroleinthefilm,didasurprisinglygoodjob--especiallyashe'sreallyknownasacountrysinger,notanactor.Allaround,averygoodfilmandonethatismeanttoinspire.
